Dungeons and Dragons Party Ideas – Decorations:
For this D&D themed party, I was inspired by the movie’s medieval and fantasy vibes. For the Dungeons and Dragons party decorations, I opted for a color scheme of red, yellow, and dark wooden brown, along with using a gray stone motif.
For the party food table and backdrop, I used the table covers and some of the wall stickers from this set.
As a food table centerpiece, I put together a collection of candies to represent Forge’s Treasure. I used gold and silver chocolate coins, Ring Pops, and rock candy (in the party colors of red and yellow).
For food trays and serving platters, I used a pack of bamboo serving trays, small bamboo storage bins, and misc. wooden bowls that I already had.
For serving plates and utensils, we used this set of biodegradable square palm leaf plates and birchwood utensils, plus these smaller square palm leaf plates for desserts. I used this rustic-looking wooden mug as a utensil holder.
One of my favorite details from the Dungeons and Dragons party decorations were the arrow message food signs. Inspired by some of the dialogue in the movie, the food signs are DIY mini arrows with messages attached. To make them, here’s what I used:
- Wooden pencils with the tips colored black with a marker
- Red archery feathers hot glued to the end of the pencils
- I cut strips from antique-looking paper and slipped them onto the pencils through two slits cut into one end of the paper.
- Finally, I hot glued the arrows onto wooden craft discs so they would stand up. To make sure they stayed attached, I nailed little holes into the wood to create a small notch for the arrow tip, which I coated with hot glue.
Dungeons and Dragons Party Food and Drink:
It’s not a D&D themed party without some fun Dungeons and Dragons themed snacks! The movie is full of great food and beverage references, making room for a lot of fun Dungeons and Dragons party food and drink ideas. Here are the Dungeons and Dragons themed food items we included in our movie watch party.
Mimic Chest Popcorn Box. Is it even a movie watch party if you don’t have popcorn? Get creative with your popcorn by serving it in a Mimic Chest!
I started with a cardboard treasure chest treat box. We cut off the parts that looked more pirate-y than DnD, and used those excess pieces to create a simple set of teeth and a tongue to make it look like the Mimic in the movie, then filled it with buttered popcorn.
One food item that stands out above the others in the movie is Holga’s Potatoes, so I had to develop a yummy potato recipe for the watch party. The results are these delicious, double-potato appetizer bites that consist of tater tot cups filled with a creamy mashed potato filling (using the method from my Loaded BBQ Pulled Pork Tater Tot Cups). Here’s the recipe!
Holga's Potatoes
Don't you dare try to come between Holga and her potatoes! These delicious, double-potato appetizer bites consist of tater tot cups filled with a creamy mashed potato filling, and are perfect for a DnD movie party.
Ingredients
- Cooking spray
- 1 (16-ounce) package frozen tater tots
- 1 (4-ounce) package instant mashed potatoes
- Water (per mashed potato package directions)
- 1/4 cup cream cheese
- 2 tablespoons sour cream
- 2 tablespoons butter or margarine
- Salt, pepper, and garlic powder (to taste)
- Grated parmesan cheese
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 450 degrees F (230 degrees C). Spray the cups of a 12-cup muffin pan with nonstick cooking spray.
- Place 4 to 5 frozen tater tots into each muffin cup.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 10 minutes.
- Remove muffin pan from the oven. Using a small glass (e.g. a small juice glass or shot glass) twist and press the tots downward in each muffin cup to create a potato cup. Return to the oven and bake until deep golden brown, about 15 more minutes.
- Meanwhile, prepare the instant mashed potatoes with water according to package directions.
- While still hot, stir in the cream cheese, sour cream, and butter until the ingredients are well mixed and the cream cheese and butter are melted into the mixture. Stir in salt, pepper, and garlic powder to taste.
- Remove the pan from the oven and distribute the mashed potato mixture evenly between the tater tot cups, being careful to keep the filling within the potato cups and not up the side of the muffin cups (I find it helpful to pipe the mashed potato filling into the cups using a plastic zipper bag with a corner snipped off). Sprinkle with parmesan cheese.
- Return to the oven and bake until the top of the mashed potatoes has browned lightly, about 5 minutes. Remove from the oven and transfer the potato cups to a serving platter.
Dino nuggets can easily become Dragon Nuggets with some imagination! We served ours with dipping sauces that represent the various materials the dragons in the movie spit: BBQ sauce for acid and ketchup for fire.
Pickleberries are not shown in the movie, but they are mentioned. We decided to serve a bowl of fresh blackberries as Dungeons and Dragons themed snacks and called them “pickleberries.”
Light blue Jell-O served in square plastic dessert cups is the perfect choice for a Gelatinous Cube dessert. I suspended a few types of berries inside the gelatin to represent what tends to happen to creatures (or things) that get absorbed into the monster’s ooze.
Candy melts are one of my favorite ways to add some color to a party theme, as they’re so easy to use! To make these simple and yummy Simon’s Staffs treats, I dipped the tips of pretzel rods in melted light blue candy melts then sprinkled them with some coarse sugar sprinkles before allowing to sit on a piece of wax paper to dry.
Twizzlers or Red Vines mimic the look of Sofina’s Beckoning Death Spell in these easy Red Wizard Vines Dungeons and Dragons party food.
I also created a recipe for a family-friendly Non-Alcoholic Mead to serve in plastic stein mugs. It’s not technically real mead, as it’s not fermented, however this spiced and honeyed apple cider does evoke the delicious flavors of the traditional beverage. Here’s how to make it!
Non-Alcoholic Mead
A family-friendly Non-Alcoholic Mead for a D&D themed party. It’s not technically real mead, as it’s not fermented, however this spiced and honeyed apple cider does evoke the delicious flavors of the traditional beverage.

Activities for a DnD Movie Party:
To make your in-home watch party even more special, here are some activities for Dungeons and Dragons party ideas.
Watch Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves! The movie is fun for the whole family and your friends to watch together!
Make a Pendant of Invisibility. As a nod to Kira’s powerful pendant necklace in the movie, this easy jewelry making craft is both an activity and a party favor. Guests can use any stones and charms they like to make a truly unique and personal pendant. Here’s what you’ll need to set up this activity:
- Necklace cords with clasps
- Mixed stone pendant charms
- Assorted silver charms
- Jewelry jump rings, assorted sizes (to add to the charms so they fit onto the necklace cords)
- Needle-nose plyers (to attach the jump rings to the charms)
To quote our favorite paladin, Xenk: “This is where I leave you. I’ve given you tools and you must utilize them.” I hope these D&D themed party ideas inspire you to create your own epic experience watching Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, available on Digital now, and on 4K Ultra HD or Blu-ray™ May 30th.
