How to Actually Find Good Recipes Online

Good recipes online are like finding a needle in a haystack. Between a universe of food blogs, recipe websites, and cooking apps it’s far too easy to get lost in the quantity. However, if you know where to look and what to value and if you follow theses four pointers, you can find gems that match your likes, dietary needs, and cooking skill level. So let’s take a look at some practical steps to finding truly good recipes online.

Narrowing Down Your Recipe Sources

Narrowing down the platforms you trust, is without a doubt the first step in finding reliable recipes. There are a lot of recipe sources on the internet, from casual food blogs to professional chef websites. Not all sites are built the same. These big platforms (Bon Appétit, Serious Eats, AllRecipes) are offering well tested and vetted recipes, so while smaller less professional sources may be less trustworthy, they can be more trustworthy.

But don’t write off small food blogs just yet. There are many passionate home cooks and chef who have blogs with their take on traditional recipes or chef’s own spin on traditional dishes. The trick is to be picky and see if the blog consistently churns out recipes that are to your liking and skill level. Go to any blog or website and try a few recipes, and then judge the reliability of their content by the results in your kitchen.

Evaluating Recipe Websites for Credibility

A website that offers recipes isn’t necessarily credible. Even with a well designed, glossy website, cooking times and ingredient measurements can be inaccurate. So, they can be evaluated for credibility by looking for clear, detailed instructions along with if the recipes are explained clearly enough for the beginners to follow easily. The site should ideally also have step by step photos or videos to help confirm that the instructions are sensible.

A comment section with user reviews and feedback is another indication of a legitimate recipe source. If several people report that a recipe’s timing was off or that an ingredient measurement was off, you can take the recipe more cautiously. Often on a high quality recipe site there is a live community or perhaps an editor who will respond to comments, giving an impression of someone who isn’t just scraping articles back and forth, hoping that no one notices a dead link or conflicting instruction.

Utilizing Recipe Aggregators and Apps

Recipe aggregators are great ways to organize and filter through thousands of recipes at once. The recipes are gathered by these platforms from all over the internet and will filter based on type of dish, dietary restriction, availability of ingredients, etc., letting you search however you see fit. And some apps, like Paprika, even allow you to import recipes from different sites to build your own cookbook.

Many of these apps offer good functionality but depending where in the world you’re from, some of their content may be unavailable to you. That’s where a VPN can come in handy. But in case when you have a VPN, you’ll have access to a wider array of content that certain events might be blocked because of your location.

Imagine, if you are utilizing a free trial service such as Surfshark’s free trial – you could, for instance, browse recipes from different regions that might provide you the opportunity to discover how beloved traditional dishes can have in international cultures; otherwise, maybe you wouldn’t know about them. Having it in your pocket is a smart tool to expand your recipe search across borders without any hassle.

Filtering Recipes Based on Your Dietary Needs

The other challenge in finding good recipes online is that they must be good for you. It doesn’t matter if you’re vegan, gluten free, paleo or just trying to cut back on sugar, you need to find recipes that fit your needs without compromising taste.

The good news is that most of the big recipe sites let you filter by dietary preferences. For example, Minimalist Baker and Oh She Glows are sites that focus on plant based or gluten free recipes. As mentioned earlier, many of these recipe aggregators also allow you to set dietary restrictions in your profile, so you only see recipes that fit your needs. When looking for blogs, look to see if they have categories or tags that help you locate food which lodges into your scheme of things.

Understanding Recipe Reviews and Ratings

Recipe ratings and reviews are your best friend when you’re looking for a recipe online. With more positive reviews, a recipe is more likely to be reliable than one with less, and few people tend to trust in recipes with no feedback. However, be aware of how you read these ratings. A recipe might be a rave but might not be right for you, your taste, your skill level or your dietary preferences.

For more detailed insights, look at the comments section. With a healthy variety of reviews, you’re bound to get helpful modifications or substitutions based upon different kitchen setups or ingredient availability. They also share tips on changing cooking times and adding spices to enhance flavor. With these insights they become a bit more personalized, and a bit more to your own liking with your own palate.

Exploring Niche Cooking Blogs for Unique Recipes

Finding well tested and popular dishes on mainstream recipe websites is great, but if you want to go deeper into specific cuisines or cooking styles, niche cooking blogs are a treasure trove. There’s a blog out there for whatever you’re interested in Japanese home cooking, Middle Eastern dishes, or Southern comfort food. Many of these blogs are recipes that have been passed down through generations or new twists on things that aren’t found on bigger sites.

Niche bloggers can follow you and introduce you to ingredients or cooking techniques you haven’t tried before. With the recipes often carrying personal stories or cultural context as well, these recipes make for beautiful blogs that can turn the process of cooking into something a little bit more meaningful. If you’re eager to broaden your gastronomic horizons, then a good place to get started is by exploring these specially themed blogs.

Making the Most of Social Media for Recipe Discovery

In the last couple of years, we saw the rise of social media platforms such as Instagram, Pinterest, and TikTok as sources for discovering new recipes. Short videos, reels, and stories featuring influencers, chefs, and home cooks sharing their favorite recipes, with step by step guides or links to full written instructions. However, in both cases Instagram and Pinterest, search and use of hashtag features are fantastic ways to find inspiration quickly.

But not all the recipes you see on social media will be well tested. Before diving into a recipe it’s always a good idea to check comments or read user feedback. However, when it comes to ideas for new creative recipes, social media is a goldmine, provided you’re interested in what’s hot in the food world. If you’re trying something ambitious for the first time, just remember to cross reference recipes with more trusted sources.
