In less than one week my husband and I will be celebrating our 10th wedding anniversary. When I look back, on one hand I’m amazed by how fast the time has flown by. But on the other hand, it seems like it was a lifetime ago. So much was different: we didn’t have our kids, we had a lot fewer lines around our eyes and on our foreheads, and life was slower and a bit less connected. Being less connected, I didn’t yet have an iPhone with access to internet in my hands, and Pinterest didn’t yet exist. Take that in for a second – I planned my wedding without Pinterest or iPhone apps!
I was thinking about this a few weeks ago… how different it would have been if I was planning my wedding this year instead of 10 years ago. I started thinking about how I use the new Oros app (which you can get for free for iOS or Android here: http://bit.ly/fab-everyday) for quick, trusted recommendations for local restaurants (whether here in Austin or in other cities when I’m traveling), or for things to do with my kids in Austin. I realized that Oros is perfect for all kinds of local referrals and recommendations wherever you are. You can also connect with other users nationwide for advice and ideas (read my full review of the Oros app here).
With all this in mind, I did a little experiment. I need to do a new family photo shoot to have some updated pictures of us, and I love the romantic and wistful style of engagement photo shoots. Since my own engagement photographer from 10 years ago lives out of state, I decided to ask Oros for recommendations. In no time, I had a few thoughtful recommendations from local Austin people.
Now I might not have a wedding to plan at the moment, but it was fun to get back into that zone for a bit. On Oros I could get recommendations for venues, caterers, photographers, florists, cake bakeries, bands and DJs, and even ideas for where to go on honeymoon. In this broad digital world saturated with information on thousands of pages of Google search, Oros can connect you with information on a more personal level. You can trust the recommendations you get, because they don’t come from a company that pays for the best search engine ranking – they come from real people. Oros broadens your network, and reminds you that you don’t have to take on life’s mysteries alone.
What kinds of things would you use an app like this for? If you haven’t yet, go download Oros for free here, and follow Oros on Facebook, Twitter (@OrosText), LinkedIn, and Instagram (@OrosText) to stay informed on app updates.
