I woke up today asking myself “what can I do today to help make progress?” While I’ve been doing a lot of self-reflection and have had many discussions with my family and friends this week, I know that’s just the first step. Then I saw this quote from author and activist Angela Y. Davis: “I am no longer accepting the things I cannot change. I am changing the things I cannot accept.” If you think about it, that is a mindset shift. It changes the perspective from “just the way things are” (therefore something too big to change as an individual) to something that, even if monumental, just can’t be allowed to continue. This mindset shift had to happen for many people individually that then came together collectively to move mountains during all major moments of progressive change in US history (think: our revolution from England, abolishing slavery, granting women the right to vote). It took people saying, “you know what? NO. No more.”

Now back to the present. For me today, I cannot accept systemic racism, therefore I need to see what I can do to change it. It starts by understanding what it is, how deep it goes, and the forms it takes in various parts of the system. It’s not a buzzword; it’s a disturbing fact in our society that has set the Black community up for failure at every step. Research it. Understand it. Believe it. Share what you learn so that others can see it too. Then when you see where you can make a difference, call it out and demand change. There’s no one way or one place to demand change because it exists all throughout the system, but that shouldn’t be a barrier for us to not try and change it. I will not accept it.

I’m sharing this because this is the work I myself am doing today, but it is definitely not the only action to take. There are many, including writing to officials, signing petitions, sharing Black stories, educating yourself, teaching your children, correcting family members, protesting injustice, supporting Black business, demanding diversity and representation from the companies you patron and work for, donating to causes fighting against inequity, and more. Search the #BlackLivesMatter hashtag for more specific actions to take.

Have you ever had #tostones? Tostones are made with green (unripe) plantains and are a very popular side dish in many Caribbean and South American countries. You can have them salty or sweet. My family likes to eat our platanos salty, so crispy homemade tostones (plantain chips) were a staple for us in our #PuertoRican home. The traditional method is to twice-fry the plantains in oil, but if you're looking for a lower-guilt version, I am sharing a lighter air-fried version of my Puerto Rican family’s recipe. While of course nothing beats the original way of making these, air fryer tostones turn out really crispy and delicious for those that need a lower oil alternative.

When my family visited the @ncrmuseum a few years ago, this massive art piece in the lobby (Movement to Overcome by Michael Pavlovsky) struck me immediately. It depicts the uphill struggle of the Black American, and if you look closely, in the center there is a man lifting and pulling up a fellow man. Though my sons were only about 4 and 6 at the time, we felt it important for them to be aware of the oppression forced upon other human beings in our own country during dark times in our nation’s history. What has been difficult for me to see from my bubble of privilege until the horrors brought forward these past weeks is the disturbing reality that things have not changed much in the 50 years since Dr. King was assassinated in the very location that the National Civil Rights Museum stands today. In this realization, I have felt upset, angry, exasperated, and helpless... for days I have struggled wondering what I could do. I am still trying to understand the best ways I can personally fight against racism and aid POC in their struggles, but what I do know is that I can’t just stand by and let it continue. We decided to start within our own home. Though we haven’t shielded our kids from the atrocities of the world, we had a different conversation with them yesterday. We spoke to our boys (now 8 and 10) candidly about #GeorgeFloyd, #AhmaudArbery, #BreonnaTaylor, and #ChristianCooper, and were very frank about how our boys would grow up with a much different experience in our country than a person of color. We explained their white privilege. And though our kids would love to be “colorblind” (they’ve both expressed at different times that they don’t want to think of any of their friends differently), we told them the importance of recognizing race in order to see the different life experiences that come with it and step in to fight injustice. This was the first step. Each member of our family pledged to each other yesterday that we would be like the man in the center of this sculpture. We would use whatever strength we have (through our privilege, voice, whatever we have) to lift up our fellow human. Because all lives can not matter until #BlackLivesMatter.
