My boys have such different personalities, but they both own it! My oldest, with his bright red dyed hair is my techie gamer kid, and my youngest, with his head of long and spirally curls, loves anything to do with sports. How boring would life be if we were all the same? One of our favorite candies, NERDS, believes that everyone is perfectly imperfect (just like their candies) and encourages people to “nerd out” by embracing and celebrating nerdiness in themselves and everyone. I love watching my sons nerding out and celebrating not only their own passions but also the things that makes the other unique. My oldest is so proud of his brother’s natural abilities with sports, and Sawyer is always bragging about how smart his brother is.
The is all about celebrating “nerd culture.” To enter to win, participants must answer the question “What do you nerd out on, and why?” For Sawyer, it’s his passion to improve at baseball. He takes it upon himself to practice, runs to increase his speed, and does pushups for fun to maintain his strength between games.
For my oldest, it’s studying every waking hour to teach himself how to play games and solve problems. He then takes that passion further by teaching others. I love watching him enthusiastically sharing the knowledge he learns with his family and friends.
The best is seeing how these passions connect them with others. Their passion is contagious and draws others to them… and it helps encourage others to unleash their own passions without apology. And when people with different passions, interests, and skills get together, great things happen. Big things get achieved.
