Organizing and Decluttering Tips for 2020

I have worked in collaboration with one of our partners to provide you with the below post.

As the new year rolls in, even two months into the year, it can still be difficult to get organized and settled into a routine. Luckily there are great new products and tricks out there that will help us to declutter, organize, and make the upcoming year a breeze. If the weather is mild you may consider larger structural changes to the household such as LeafFilter gutter protection to protect against January rains and April showers, but a nice blend of maintenance and management also goes a long way. Let’s look at the options, below:

Store on Doors

As we organize our homes, it’s important to recognize areas of the house that can act ask a storage solution but you aren’t currently utilizing. Although there may be many examples of this in your home, one example is your doors. Room doors can be used for storage, of course, but you can also try different door storage solutions on your cabinet doors, pantry doors, or closet door. I’m sure many of us have seen or even used over-the-door shoe storage. You can use it as intended and store shoes or try it with other small things like craft or kids’ homework supplies. But, as more are trying to keep their homes looking clean and cohesive, for many, the over the door shoe storage has run its course and other storage solutions are becoming more popular. Try using a mounted hanging rail or a behind-the-door wire organizer to store your belongings and help go along with the rest of your home’s style.

Set Aside Storage for Holiday Supplies

The holidays are often the busiest and potentially the messiest times of our year. Between the kids being home from school and the overwhelming abundance of holiday decorations, your house can easily become disorganized and cluttered. A great tip to help you plan for smaller upcoming holidays and then, “the most wonderful time of the year” in November and December, is to set aside storage for your holiday decorations. Try Christmas decoration storage solutions like wreath storage bags, ornament chests, and tree keepers to use specifically for your holiday supplies. This is a great way to plan ahead and eliminate the stress of finding a place for your holiday decor and instead, focus on shopping for your loved ones.

Organizing and Decluttering Tips

When in Doubt, Put it on the Wall

Wall space is one of the least utilized spaces when it comes to decluttering. There are many ways you can use it to declutter your home in a subtle and tasteful manner. A recently popular trend for many home office spaces is the use of grid wall panels which have become a trending paper organizational system. They come in many different colors and types and are a functional way to stylize your office space. But they really come in handy with the abundance of notes, documents, and reminders you may have on your desk. Simply clip them to the panel as necessary and your desk will be free of clutter.

Another popular but functional trend in home decor to help make use of your wall space is floating shelves. They are a great way to declutter your living space in any room in the house. You can rid your counters and tabletops of decor and unnecessary items and store them up high on your floating shelves. You can also find great use of them in your kitchen if you don’t have as much cabinet space as you’d like. They’re a great way to show off the clean and organized look of your spices and seasonings without necessarily needing a spice cabinet.

Mail Station

Mail brings constant clutter to our house on a daily basis. As soon as we get rid of one pile of junk mail, in comes another. And anytime there is important mail, it somehow always gets lost in the sea of useless papers. A great way to combat this is by installing a mail sorter on the wall of your entryway, laundry, or mudroom. You can find this type of organizer with as many mail slots as you need and label them accordingly. Some will organize by the people in the household, others will organize by importance. You can try whatever method works best for you and your family but regardless, it’s a great way to manage the constant mail that comes to your house.

Hidden Storage Solutions

With the living room and bedrooms being the places where everyone gathers and spends most of their time, both can get messy very quickly. Sadly, they also can be some of the hardest areas to put in place effective storage solutions. But, you can try hidden storage through many furniture pieces like ottomans and mirrors. Ottomans are a long-time favorite for living room storage because, if you have one that opens up, you can throw in blankets, pillows, and even some of the kids’ craft or videogame supplies. Over-the-door storage mirrors are increasingly being utilized for a range of small items and most commonly, jewelry. They are a great way to keep jewelry and other small things separate and hidden away to maintain a clean look in your space.

Of course, there are a hundred more ways that you can organize and declutter your home this year but try following these five tips to get you started. But be careful not to overwhelm yourself with a long list of things to do. Make a plan and set some goals. Before you know it, you’ll be an expert organizer and be happier with the look and feel of your home.
