I am very excited to announce a new series here on Fab Everyday! With the help of Amanda Gibby Peters, founder of Simple Shui (a modern-day, mission-driven, love-based practice of Feng Shui) and author of Simple Shui for Every Day: 365 Ways to Feng Shui Your Life, we are going to be sharing a series of easy, attainable Feng Shui and mindfulness tips over the coming weeks. With all of us spending so much time at home (and with the various stressors we’re facing due to the pandemic), we felt that this was the perfect time to share some simple steps for you to take some control of both your environment and self-care through the practice of Feng Shui. We hope you’ll see that despite life feeling out of control at times, there are things you can control, right now, in your own home to help you feel better.
In addition to practical tips (just like the realistic tips Amanda shares in her new book), we’ll be sharing information on how your everyday actions (with intention) can become mindfulness rituals and a form of meditation that allows for reflection, clarity, and self-care. If you’re feeling anything like what I’ve been feeling these past six weeks, then having more clarity and self-care in my everyday life sounds pretty darn good.
I’m so happy to bring you Amanda Gibby Peters’ first contribution today. This first article is on the importance of ritual, and how something as simple as sweeping can change the energy in your home and how you show up for yourself. Enjoy!
Sweeping as a mindfulness ritual – three reasons to grab your broom and give sweeping a whirl
By Amanda Gibby Peters
What began as a simple starting point for an overwhelmed client has become the vertebrae of every single one of my Feng Shui consults: When you don’t know what else to do, sweep.
Whether you are at a crossroads or just want to keep your energy upright, sweeping will change the air around you. If you’ve never heard – or tired – this before, you are in for a fascinating surprise. Here are three reasons to grab your broom and give sweeping a whirl:
1. Sweeping is an excellent ritual to incorporate into a daily or weekly routine. First, think of ritual as necessary attention for any intention. Whenever we align quality attention with a ritual, our intentions are given the spotlight. Eventually, those intentions have the momentum to manifest experiences that “feel better” – which becomes a frequent feeling / experience in your life.
A simple ritual I LOVE is to regularly sweep outside our front door. This signals to the universe we are open for opportunity and luck to find us. As I sweep, I give thanks for the week and all its possibilities. Feng Shui orchestrates the rest!
2. Aren’t sure where to sweep? Follow me and start outside your front door. Feng Shui reveres a home’s entrance like a red carpet – it’s where we both attract and welcome a wide-range of good possibilities into a home. So, if you want luck and opportunity to find you, make your entrance entrancing.
By the way, the more we use the front door, the more auspicious energy we invite into our homes and lives. A sweeping ritual is the perfect way to stitch the door’s frequent use into a regular habit.
3. The act of sweeping is synonymous for out with the old, in with the new. Not only are you sweeping away dirt and debris, you are symbolically releasing the past and any lingering, low vibe energy while preparing room to receive “refreshments.” By declaring spots in our home as sacred space and maintaining them, little improvements ripple into other areas of our lives. Sweeping is a simple gesture toward our home, and a powerful statement to the universe. And this message gets her attention. Every time.
A ritual – like sweeping – is not only a mindful practice in home health. It is also shifts how we show up for ourselves in our lives. Something sacred happens when we excavate what isn’t serving us and pursue simplicity as an everyday experience. A small pattern habitually repeated makes a BIG difference, and you will find yourself living energetically at a much higher octave.
Once you start sweeping, watch for delightful little synchronicities. As you reclaim your home and all its potent power, listen to your instincts. Your house will give you clues and cues precisely where to take your attention next. Lean into your space and find ways to anchor rituals of LOVE into your days – they will become beaming beacons of light, attracting the necessary ingredients for a really good life. And when you don’t know what else to do, sweep.
