It’s #NationalGrilledCheeseSandwichDay, and I felt it was the perfect time to share an absolutely delicious variation on the classic grilled cheese: a Pulled Pork Grilled Cheese Sandwich! When comfort food and delicious barbecue collide, amazing things happen. Case in point, this sandwich that had my whole family drooling. This is a delicious grilled cheese with pulled pork. If you’re looking for a BBQ grilled cheese sandwich or a pork grilled cheese, this is a great way to use up leftover pulled pork, or just do something different when you’re craving some BBQ flavor. I’m sharing instructions for how to make it the old-fashioned way in a frying pan, as well as in the air fryer.
Best cheese with pulled pork
I have found that both Swiss cheese and fontina cheese are the best cheese with pulled pork flavor-wise. The combination of the two are also perfect for grilled cheese sandwiches in how they melt and how the flavors complement each other.
How to make pulled pork grilled cheese
To make this BBQ grilled cheese sandwich the traditional way (in a frying pan), start by topping a piece of bread with a slice of Swiss cheese. Layer pulled pork and BBQ sauce on top of the cheese to taste. Just measure that with your heart. Add a second slice of Swiss and a slice of fontina on top of the pork, then top with another piece of bread.
Lightly butter the outside of both pieces of bread, and grill in a frying pan over medium-high heat (or air fry – see instructions in the notes below) until browned on both sides and the cheese is melted.
How to make this BBQ grilled cheese sandwich in the air fryer
Grilled cheese sandwiches come out amazingly in the air fryer – so crisp, toasty, and melty! To make this BBQ pulled pork grilled cheese in the air fryer, pre-heat an air fryer to 380 degrees F for 5 minutes while you are assembling your sandwich per the same instructions in the recipe. After it’s done pre-heating, spray the air fryer basket with non-stick spray and place the sandwich inside. Cook at 380 degrees for 6 minutes, then flip the sandwich and cook for an additional 4 minutes, or until the bread is your desired brownness.
