Food ideas for an Avatar: The Last Airbender party
Is it even a good party without good snacks? With the great imagery from the shows, plus lots of foods referenced in the shows themselves, there are lots of great food ideas with the Avatar: The Last Airbender party theme. Here’s what we made for our watch party.
Cupcakes with DIY Candy Melt Cupcake Toppers
Candy melts are one of my favorite easy, cost-effective ways to add color to a party. For our Avatar: The Last Airbender party, we made the symbols for the four main bending types (Water, Fire, Earth, and Air) in candy melts by tracing the symbols over wax paper (the free printable of the symbols is linked at the end of this post).
We used candy melts in the colors associated with each symbol (blue, red, green, and yellow).
Aang and Korra Sugar Cookies
Since the collection celebrates the Avatars from the Air Nomads (Aang) and Water Tribe (Korra), we decorated sugar cookies that represent both Aang and Korra using blue sparkle cake decorating gel. For Aang, we decorated round cookies with the signature arrow tattoo that represents his airbending mastery, and for Korra, we decorated square cookies with the pattern from her armband.
Other food ideas for the Avatar: The Last Airbender party theme were easy using the official cookbook of the series! I’m sharing a few of the recipes we used here (shared with permission). The recipes referenced in this post can be found in “Avatar: The Last Airbender: The Official Cookbook: Recipes from the Four Nations” by Jenny Dorsey.
Aang’s Favorite Egg Tarts
Any true fan of the Avatar universe knows that Aang’s favorite treat is egg tarts! They also happen to be the perfect treat for an Avatar: The Last Airbender birthday. Here’s the official recipe!
Aang’s Favorite Egg Tarts
There is nothing like a freshly baked egg tart. The best ones I've had are from Omashu (don't tell Monk Gyatso!), with a crust made from lychee nuts and a spectacularly smooth and silky custard inside. I heard from Bumi's palace cooks that they learned the ways of the egg tart from Earth Nation merchants after returning home from exploring the world. Maybe one day I can take all of Team Avatar to the land of egg tarts... now that would be a dream! --Aang
Ingredients
FOR THE CRUST:
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 cup toasted barley flour
- 1/2 cup hazelnut flour
- 1 tablespoon toasted white sesame seeds
- 2 tablespoons cornstarch
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
- 3/4 cup cold unsalted butter, cubed
- 3 tablespoons cold water
- Cooking spray
FOR THE FILLING:
- 1 cup unsweetened soy milk
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch
- 1 large whole egg plus 2 large egg yolks
- 1/3 cup white sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
Instructions
TO MAKE THE CRUST:
- Combine the flours, sesame seeds, cornstarch, sugar, and salt in a food processor. Pulse a few times to mix evenly. Add butter, and pulse together until the mixture resembles coarse sand. Add water, a tablespoon at a time, and pulse again until the mixture just comes together. If necessary, add more or less water. Wrap mixture in plastic, and let rest in the refrigerator for 30 minutes.
- Unwrap and place mixture between two sheets of parchment paper, and gently roll out until 1/8-inch thick. Let chill in refrigerator until needed. Allow dough to come to just under room temperature before using for molds, so it is more pliable.
TO MAKE THE FILLING:
- In a medium pan, whisk together soy milk and cornstarch until smooth.
- In a medium bowl, whisk together egg, egg yolks, sugar, and salt until very smooth.
- Heat soy milk over medium until just barely bubbling. Carefully temper soy milk into eggs, a quarter cup at a time, and whisk until smooth.
TO ASSEMBLE:
- Preheat oven to 400° F. Prepare egg tart molds of choice (3½-inch tart pans will yield approximately six tarts), covering with nonstick spray if needed.
- Use a knife or ring cutter to cut dough to fit into egg tart molds. If the crusts break, simply patch them with additional dough.
- Pour egg filling into crusts to fill them about three quarters full, using a fine strainer if desired to remove air bubbles. Alternatively, you can blowtorch the bubbles out of the top of the egg tart.
- Bake in oven for 10 minutes, then decrease heat to 350° F. Bake for another 10 minutes, or until eggs are firm and cooked through, and cake tester comes out clean. Let rest 5 minutes before removing from molds.

Appa Blend Bubble Tea
When looking for beverage ideas for an Avatar: The Last Airbender party, I’m sure Uncle Iroh’s tea comes to mind. In one episode, Iroh famously “invented” bubble tea, which he shared with Aang and Zuko. The official cookbook includes several tea recipes, but since the Appa Blend Bubble Tea is super fun for a party, that’s what we made. Here’s the recipe (and you can save time by using dehydrated brown sugar tapioca pearls as a starter for the recipe like I did).
Appa Blend Bubble Tea
Zuko and Aang might not have liked my first few experiments with bubble tea, but let's not fixate on that. It's been a hit since then! My customers love these chewy tapioca balls so much, I've started adding them to all sorts of teas at the shop. The top seller, though, is always this particular combination of rich, malty black teas from the mountainous eastern slopes of the Earth Nation. --Iroh
Ingredients
FOR THE BOBA:
- 1/4 cup tapioca flour, plus more for dusting
- 1/8 cup boiling water (25 grams)
FOR THE SYRUP:
- 1/2 cup light brown sugar
- 3 cups water
FOR THE TEA:
- 2 tablespoons Chinese black tea, preferably Qimen (or English breakfast or other black tea)
- 2 cups boiling water
- Milk of choice
Instructions
TO MAKE THE BOBA:
- Place tapioca flour in a small bowl. Drizzle with boiling water while mixing with a fork.
- Transfer mixture to a surface lightly dusted with tapioca flour, and knead with hands until the dough is smooth.
- Form dough into a long rope 1/4-inch thick, and cut into small pieces 1/8-inch thick.
- Roll each piece into a ball. Reserve in freezer if not moving to the next step immediately.
TO MAKE THE SYRUP:
- Combine sugar and water in a medium pot over medium-high heat, and bring to a light boil.
- Once sugar has melted completely, add boba, and bring back to a light boil. Continue to cook until the balls turn completely translucent, approximately 20 minutes.
- Let cool, and reserve boba in syrup, in refrigerator.
TO MAKE THE TEA:
- Steep tea in water for 5 minutes, then strain. Chill tea in refrigerator until cold.
- When ready to serve, place boba at the base of each glass. Add 1/2 cup to 3/4 cup chilled tea. Add milk of choice, to desired amount. Serve!

Legend of Korra birthday party and Avatar: The Last Airbender party decorations
For our Avatar: The Last Airbender party decorations, we focused on a color scheme that represented the main bending types (pops of blue, red, green, and yellow) and other natural colors and textures found throughout the universe (beige/parchment, stone grey, and bamboo). I love the way they came together for the Avatar: The Last Airbender party theme!
The party backdrop included a roll-up reed shade (a curtain piece repurposed as party décor) which was placed behind a table covered in a stone gray tablecloth.
I found a pack of round paper lanterns with the colors of the main nations (blue, red, green, and yellow) in multiple sizes. We hung them at different lengths above the food table.
For food serving, I used a 3-pack of bamboo serving trays and small bamboo storage bins.
For additional Avatar: The Last Airbender party decorations, we placed an assortment of reasonably priced DRACAENA bamboo plants from IKEA on the table as well. These plants now live in my kids’ rooms to care for as a special memory from our Avatar: The Last Airbender party.
Avatar: The Last Airbender party games
There are a lot of fun Avatar: The Last Airbender party games to keep kiddos entertained! Here are some fun and easy ideas.
Show Marathon
The easiest activity if you’re looking for Avatar: The Last Airbender party ideas is to play a marathon of the shows from The Ultimate Aang and Korra Blu-rayTM Collection!
World of Avatar Trivia
Hardcore Avatar fans will have fun comparing their knowledge with a World of Avatar Trivia game (get the free printable worksheet linked at the end of this post).
“My Cabbages!” Game
Aside from watching the Blu-rays, the game my kids enjoyed the most was the “My Cabbages!” game! Essentially a game a hot potato, the kids tossed a DIY cabbage (instructions below) in honor of fan-favorite background character Cabbage Man. The instructional game sign is available as a free printable (linked at the end of this post).
The make the cabbage, you’ll need:
- 3 pieces of light green felt
- A salad plate
- A pen
- Scissors
- Polyfill (or other pillow stuffing)
- A glue gun and hot glue sticks
Using the salad plate, trace circles on two of the pieces of felt and cut them out.
In the third piece of felt, cut out two ruffly partial circle layers. Hot glue the rounded (not ruffly) edges of those layers to the top of one of the circles, leaving the ruffly edge loose.
Add some stuffing then attach the two felt circles together with a glue gun. You can also sew them together if you prefer.
This is how it looks! Like a little frilly, fluffy cabbage pillow.
Such a fun game!
Pin the Tail on Momo and Pabu
