When To Call an HVAC Professional: Signs Your AC Needs Expert Help

To keep your home as comfortable as possible, you need to learn how to spot the early signs of AC problems. When you repair issues early, it prevents them from snowballing out of control. More importantly, it helps you maintain your home’s comfort and energy efficiency. While some issues can be handled on your own, other problems require the skills of a professional heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) professional.

By maintaining your HVAC equipment, you can significantly improve your energy efficiency. AC maintenance also prevents your air conditioning unit from breaking down at unexpected times during the peak season. Through the help of an HVAC professional from a trusted company like Balance Point Heating, Cooling & Plumbing, you can ensure your HVAC system works its best throughout the year.

1. Insufficient Cooling or Weak Airflow

One of the first signs you need an air conditioning repair service is if there are changes in your AC’s cooling capacity. For example, you may have hot or cold spots in different rooms. Additionally, you may notice that the airflow is less than it should be in all or part of your home.

This type of problem can stem from several underlying issues. Duct obstructions can prevent air from reaching each room. Clogged air filters are another common AC repair issue. Fortunately, you can easily improve airflow by replacing or cleaning the clogged filter.

Your refrigerant levels could be causing warmer airflow in your rooms. Refrigerants are normally responsible for transferring heat outside of your home. When this level gets low, your AC can’t do its job. Because refrigerants are hazardous to the environment and human health, you should always hire an HVAC professional to handle recharging your AC’s refrigerant.

2. Strange Noises From the AC Unit

There are various noises that can indicate your HVAC system is having a problem. Ignoring these problems can lead to major damage and expensive repairs. In some cases, you may even have to replace the entire system.

The following are some of the most common AC noises and what they mean.

  • Hissing: This typically indicates a refrigerant leak. If you hear this noise, shut off your AC and call an HVAC professional for help right away.
  • Banging: A banging noise means there may be loose parts. An HVAC technician can inspect your AC and tighten or secure the loose components.
  • Clicking: While it’s normal to hear a clicking noise when your AC starts up, you shouldn’t hear constant clicking noises. When this happens, it means that there may be electrical problems.

3. Frequent Cycling On and Off

An AC shouldn’t cycle on and off frequently. When this happens, it indicates dirty air filters, a faulty thermostat, or electrical issues. While you can replace air filters and perform basic tasks on your own, more serious issues require professional care.

Short cycling can significantly increase the amount of energy your home uses. It also increases the strain on your HVAC system, which can cause premature breakdowns. To avoid expensive repairs, arrange for expert HVAC help.

4. Unpleasant Odors

Your air conditioner shouldn’t produce any weird scents. If you notice odd smells, you may need AC repair help. Foul smells may be signs of electrical problems, mold, leaky refrigerant, or burnt-out parts.

These issues can impact indoor air quality and your family’s safety. For example, burning smells may indicate electrical problems, which could potentially cause a fire. To protect your family and avoid additional repairs, it’s important to get expert HVAC help right away.

5. Increased Energy Bills

Your electricity bills should remain relatively the same from month to month. If your energy bills skyrocket for no explainable reason, it may mean your AC is working harder than it should because of a faulty component. Whenever you notice a sudden increase in your energy bills, you should get your AC inspected by a professional right away.

6. Moisture or Leaks Around the Unit

There should never be any moisture or leaks around your AC unit. If you notice these signs of AC problems, you may have refrigerant leaks, a clogged drain line, or a frozen evaporator coil.

These signs are an indication that you need professional help. If you don’t get your AC repaired quickly, you could end up causing additional damage to your air conditioning unit. Additionally, the leak can cause water damage and mold growth in your home.

Get Professional Help for Your HVAC Problems

By getting an HVAC professional to inspect your AC, you can extend the lifespan of your air conditioner by years. Weird smells, airflow issues, unusual sounds, short cycling, water leaks, and higher energy bills are all indications that you need repair help. If you don’t get these problems fixed right away, they can transform into more severe problems over time.

With the help of a trusted provider like Balance Point Heating, Cooling & Plumbing, you can get your HVAC unit professionally inspected and repaired. You don’t want a minor problem spiraling into a major issue, so schedule an AC maintenance and repair appointment as soon as possible.
