How to Host a Family Diving Holiday Successfully

It is known that engaging in unique activities is a great way to build memories and few things can provide as unique an experience as going on a scuba dive. As a family activity, scuba diving can help to make memories and forge family bonds that will last. Every family is different and has different needs, but with some forethought, any family can have a blast exploring the watery deep.

If you are struggling to think of the best way to plan a unique and memorable excursion for the whole family for the next summer holiday, stop right here, we got you. Planning a scuba-dive-centered holiday is the perfect way to do something unique that will create memories and forge family bonds. What could be better than the shared experience of exploring and seeing the world from a totally new perspective, an underwater perspective?

Planning a good scuba trip is a little more involved than just packing your swimmers and heading for the beach, and good planning can make the difference between a wonderful experience that everyone will cherish and a bit of a mess. Obviously, the most crucial thing is to make sure you have the right scuba gear for everyone’s comfort and experience level. There are lots of ways to get scuba equipment and some locations specialize in renting equipment suited for adults and children to interested families. This article will cover the other salient points that anyone planning a family scuba holiday should focus on.

Choosing the right destination

As we said above, a scuba diving holiday is a little more involved than just heading for the nearest or most popular beach. Especially when you have family with you, keeping things in mind like family-friendly amenities, safety and accessibility are all crucial when selecting a dive destination. There are classic diving destinations like the Caribbean and the Great Barrier Reef which have lots of infrastructure and utilities designed to support family groups. As well as the bounty of the sea to explore, these locations specialize in providing various options to keep children interested and occupied both in and out of the water.

A crucial component of making your dive destination choice is being honest about the skill level of your family members. It would be no good to take young children to a location that mostly offers challenging dives suited to experienced underwater divers. Research is your friend here, no diving destination wants to misrepresent itself, and the locations and nearby businesses will advertise clearly what level of experience you should have to be able to enjoy yourself there.

Planning the trip

Just like any other family trip you might plan, the more organised and together all the details are ahead of time, the more likely everything is to go smoothly! Having all of the accommodations, flights and other travel-related details set like jelly well before you are due to leave should make the experience simpler, and often help you to get good deals.

In terms of the actual dives, planning out the dive days and having some idea of even a rough itinerary before you go is probably a good idea. You don’t want to overload your plates and turn the holiday into a boot camp for diving, it is a holiday after all! Spreading out your diving with other family activities can make the dives much more relaxing and enjoyable for everyone, especially those who are younger and still learning.

Safety first

Diving is not an activity for the reckless or careless, and the safety of your family members should be prioritized at all points during your holiday. This isn’t to say that diving is unduly dangerous, with the right preparations and precautions diving is a perfectly safe activity. Signing up for professional instruction and lessons and if necessary getting any certifications and licences is a must before going on any family dives.

The best diving centers and businesses will have very comprehensive safety briefings and will ensure that you and your family are as safe underwater as you are at home. Once again, doing a little research is your best friend here. Businesses that specialize in taking mixed family groups diving pride themselves on their safety records and will not be shy about letting you know what they will do for you and what they expect from you.

Balancing diving with other activities

As we mentioned earlier, spreading out the diving with some other activities is typically a pretty good idea. Especially for young children, diving might not be something that they will want to do every day or for very long every day. By spacing your dive time out a little, you might end up getting more out of your family dives, even if you spend less time in the water.

Most of the resorts that are tailored for family groups will have plenty of options outside of the water for entertainment. These resorts are likely to have pools, beach games, tours of local above-water sites and even lighter water-based activities like snorkeling.

A diving holiday with your family that has been well planned and goes off without a hitch will certainly create memories and strengthen the family bond. Choosing the right location, having a good plan for getting there, taking care that everyone is safe and spreading out the time you spend diving will all add positively to the experience and help to create those special family memories.
