Wilton commissioned me to make a multi colored birthday cake recipe decorated using their new icing pouches, and the results are not just fun, but SO easy thanks to the new pouches (more on that below). I opted to make a 6-inch, 4-layer rainbow swirl cake recipe where the inside of the cake mimicked the colors of the icing that decorated the outside of the cake. This colorful birthday cake is bursting with bold, beautiful layers and bright buttercream swirls. Soft, fluffy cake gets a fun twist with rainbow-hued batter and matching piped decorations that make every slice feel like a party. Whether it’s for a birthday, a milestone, or just because, this cheerful marble rainbow cake recipe is made to stand out and made to share… while still being so easy to decorate thanks to Wilton’s new icing pouches (you know I am all about easy cake and cupcake decorating ideas). How to make a multi colored birthday cake (rainbow swirl cakes)
You can get the full detailed instructions for how to make this cake here. It includes tinting cake batter into whatever colors you like before baking to create a marble rainbow cake effect, then decorating the cake with multiple colors of icing.

In case you haven’t seen them yet, Wilton just debuted the first ready-to-use decorating icing pouches that come equipped with four built-in piping tips. These mess-free pouches are already tinted (with a choice of nine different vibrant colors), and make it easy to create bakery-style decorations at home with minimal effort. They work for cupcakes, cookies, and celebration cakes like the 6 inch birthday cake recipe that I’m sharing on the Wilton website today. Each pouch includes four unique tips: a star tip (great for flowers and borders), a ribbon tip (for wide stripes), a writing tip (for fine lines and dots), and a shell tip (for cool creative effects and borders) – with no piping bags needed! Truly easy to use, these are perfect for helping bakers of all skill levels and ages create handmade treats with confidence! For my rainbow swirl birthday cake, I used three of the tips to make some easy rainbow-colored decorations around the top edge of the cake (leaving room for candles or a birthday message):
- Bigger rosettes with the star tip
- Smaller swirls with the shell tip
- Small stars with the star tip
- Small dots with the round tip to fill in spaces

My rainbow swirl cake was quick and easy to decorate! So easy that you can even get the kiddos to help with this one.

Since this is a multi colored birthday cake, the colors aren’t just on the outside… the inside is a marbled rainbow swirl made with cake batter tinted in coordinating colors as the icing pouches that I used to decorate the outside. The method is easier than you might think! See the instructions on the Wilton website.

Since you tint the batter yourself, you can make the inside colors as bright or as muted as you want. You can also choose any color combination you want for your rainbow swirl cake recipe.

Every slice of this marble rainbow cake will be slightly different, which is what makes it so fun!

I can’t wait for you to try this recipe and have a chance to use Wilton’s new and improved icing pouches! They are a party planning game changer! Click here to get the Birthday Cake instructions on the Wilton website!
