I’m sharing an easy recipe for peanut butter applesauce dog treats inspired by our favorite Sky Bison, Appa from Avatar: The Last Airbender! For those that don’t know, Appa’s name comes from the word “apple,” and was given to him by Aang. Aang brought Appa an apple as a sign of friendship, which sealed their bond. Now your dogs can enjoy their own Appa-inspired treats with these homemade dog treats with applesauce. We’re making these apple peanut butter dog treats in celebration of World Animal Day along with our friends at Avatar: The Last Airbender and Nickelodeon. All month long they’re raising awareness of the conservation efforts of some of the real-life animals that inspired our favorite characters from the Avatar universe. Follow along with these efforts by following @AvatarTheLastAirbender and the hashtag #AvatarAllAboutTheAnimals on social media! One way you can join in the fun is by making these Appa-approved homemade apple dog treats. What you need to make these homemade apple dog treats
These peanut butter applesauce dog treats have only 3 ingredients and are so easy to make! Here’s what you’ll need to make these homemade dog treats with applesauce:
- Baking sheet
- Parchment paper
- Mixing bowl and spoon
- Measuring cups and spoons
- 2 cups oat flour
- 1/2 cup plain, no sugar-added applesauce (or more as needed)
- 3 tablespoons creamy peanut butter*
- Cooling rack
*Ingredient Tip: If your dog or anyone in your household has peanut allergies, you can substitute the peanut butter with 1 egg. Note that the applesauce dog treats will need to be stored in the refrigerator if using an egg.
How to make applesauce dog treats
To make these apple and peanut butter dog treats, start by preheating the oven to 350 degrees F and lining a baking sheet with parchment paper.
In a mixing bowl, combine the oat flour, applesauce, and peanut butter until well-mixed. The dough will be very thick, like play dough. It might be a little crumbly, and if it’s too crumbly for you to work with, add a little more applesauce to the peanut butter apple dog treats dough.
Using your hands, form the dough into balls and flatten them. Pinch the top corners upward to create Appa’s horns, and add a separation at the bottom-center to resemble his legs and feet. Place the peanut butter applesauce dog treats on the prepared baking sheet about an inch apart (the dough will not spread while baking, so the applesauce dog treats can be placed close together).
Bake the homemade apple dog treats in the pre-heated oven for 18-20 minutes for slightly soft treats, or 25-30 minutes for extra crunchy treats (flipping halfway through the cooking time if you’re doing the longer time). If you’re using the longer cooking time, check the peanut butter apple dog treats every few minutes to make sure Appa’s horns don’t become too burned.
Cool the apple and peanut butter dog treats on a wire rack completely before storing in an airtight container.
