Potato lovers, let me introduce you to your new favorite thing: tater tot crust pizza! I first got the idea for developing a tater tot pizza crust after making my Loaded BBQ Pulled Pork Tater Tot Cups, and realizing how well these little gems of potato-y goodness were as a base. After wanting to try it for so long, I finally did, and am so happy I did! In today’s post, not only am I sharing a delicious tater tot pizza recipe modeled after a “supreme” pizza (but you can use the recipe method to create any type of pizza you’d like with your favorite toppings on a tater tot pizza crust), I’m also sharing step-by-step photos and instructions for how to make tater tot pizza. This recipe can also easily be doubled to create two pizzas (made in two batches) if you have a 32-ounce package of tater tots. If you’re looking for a recipe for tater tots with pizza toppings or a tater tot casserole, why not make it an actual tater tots pizza?

what you need to make tater tots with pizza toppings
This tater tot pizza recipe is modeled after a “supreme” pizza (but without ham), as that’s my favorite type of pizza. However, you can use the recipe method to create any type of pizza you’d like with your favorite toppings. Here are the tools and ingredients you’ll need for making a tater tot crust pizza:
- 9-inch springform pan
- Skillet and cooking spoon
- Paper towel-lined plate
- Measuring cups and spoons
- Cutting board and knife
- 9-inch plate or large spoon
- Oven mitts
- Pizza cutter
- 16 ounces tater tots (I prefer Grown In Idaho Super Crispy Tater Tots as the crispiness works really well in recipes like this)
- 4 ounces ground Italian sausage
- 1/2 cup prepared pizza sauce
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
- 2 tablespoons shredded parmesan cheese
- 1/4 cup sliced pepperoni
- 1/4 cup thinly sliced baby bella mushrooms, or to taste
- 1/3 cup thinly sliced green bell pepper (about half a medium bell pepper), or to taste
- 1/4 cup thinly sliced red onion, or to taste
- 2 tablespoons sliced black olives, or to taste
- Italian seasoning, for garnish (optional)
how to make tater tot pizza
To make a tater tot pizza crust, first preheat your oven to 425 degrees F. Lay tater tots in circles in a single layer in the bottom of a 9-inch springform pan until the bottom of the pan is covered evenly. Bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes.
While the tater tots are baking, cook ground Italian sausage in a skillet over medium-high heat until brown and crumbled. Remove the sausage to a paper towel-lined plate to soak up any excess grease and set it aside.
After it has baked for 25 minutes, remove the springform pan from the oven and reduce the temperature to 400 degrees F. Using a 9-inch plate or large spoon, gently press the tater tots down to form a flat, even layer of potatoes with no holes. This will be your tater tot pizza crust!
Spread pizza sauce on top of the tater tot pizza crust, leaving about a half inch of space around the edge.
Add the mozzarella and parmesan cheeses evenly over the sauce.
Next, distribute the reserved sausage crumbles and pepperoni slices on top of the tater tots pizza.
Distribute the sliced mushrooms, followed by the sliced bell pepper and sliced red onions on top of the tater tot pizza next. Finally, sprinkle the sliced black olives on top.
Optional: For presentation, prepare an additional circle of tater tots that are not smashed down to bake around the edge of the tater tot crust pizza. If doing this, you can extend the cheese layer closer to the edge of the tater tot pizza crust before placing a ring of tots around the edge on top of the cheese (the cheese will help this layer stick). See my example in the completed tater tot pizza recipe photos below.
Return the tater tots with pizza toppings to the oven and bake for an additional 10–15 minutes, or until the tater tots are crispy, the cheese is melted, and the toppings are cooked to your desired amount. Allow to cool for a few minutes, then carefully remove the sides of the springform pan.
Sprinkle with Italian seasoning as a garnish, then slice with a pizza cutter.
Note: The tater tot pizza crust will be soft at first, so you’ll need to support it while picking a piece up to eat it (especially if you use a lot of toppings). If you let your tater tot pizza cool for a few minutes, it will be much easier to hold. I have also found that using Super Crispy tots varieties yield a firmer crust. If you don’t want to wait and are ready to chow down right away, you can always eat your tater tot pizza with a fork if your slices are difficult to hold.
Here’s the tater tot pizza recipe! I’d love to hear how you top yours, so feel free to let us know what topping combos worked great for you in the comments, and tag me @fabeveryday on social media to show me your tater tot crust pizza creations!
