When two of our loves combine: Halloween and Star Wars! We are big Star Wars fans (see our DIY Mandalorian Halloween costumes for this year and our Star Wars: The Force Awakens costumes from a few years ago), so we love coming up with creative Star Wars-inspired ideas. After we realized how perfectly craft pumpkins work for anything round (like our Pokeball pumpkins and our Pugkins), we knew they’d be perfect for making our favorite droid, BB-8. Because of how much we love the Mandalorian, we also decided to make a pumpkin for the most precious little nugget in the galaxy, Grogu or The Child (AKA Baby Yoda). If you’re looking for ideas for Star Wars Halloween decorations, I’m sharing instructions for how we made our easy DIY BB-8 and Grogu / Baby Yoda pumpkin crafts.
How to make a BB-8 pumpkin
What you need:
- 1 white craft pumpkin
- 1 smaller decorative foam pumpkin
- White spray paint
- Orange acrylic paint
- Gray acrylic paint
- Black acrylic paint
- White acrylic paint (for touch ups)
- Glue gun and glue sticks
Instructions:
Remove or cut the stem from the smaller pumpkin, then spray paint both pumpkins completely with white spray paint. The smaller pumpkin will be BB-8’s head, and the larger craft pumpkin will be his body.
After the spray paint dries, use the orange, gray, and black acrylic paint to add decorative details to BB-8 (I used examples from a Google Images search to inspire the details). Use white acrylic paint to touch up the artwork as needed, then allow the paint to dry.
Once the paint has dried, attach BB-8’s head to his body by securing it with hot glue. Attach the head tilted at an angle by leaning it on the larger pumpkin’s stem.

How to make a Grogu (Baby Yoda) pumpkin
What you need:
- 1 white craft pumpkin
- Pale green acrylic paint (I used a color called “Cactus”)
- Black acrylic paint
- Darker green acrylic paint
- White acrylic paint
- Light green foam
- Pink foam
- Beige or tan felt
- Glue gun and glue sticks
Instructions:
Paint the entire craft pumpkin (including the stem) pale green. You will likely need two coats to get an even layer of color.
After the green paint dries, paint eyes, a nose, and mouth with black paint on your Baby Yoda pumpkin. Use the darker green paint to add a few details on the cheeks, forehead, nose, and chin (though you don’t need too many wrinkles, since the texture of the craft pumpkin already adds to the wrinkly effect). Add some white paint to the eyes to give them a little sparkle.
Cut triangles of green foam along with smaller pieces of pink foam (see the picture above). Using hot glue, secure the pink foam onto the green, then fold the edge of the green foam over, securing with more hot glue.
Create Baby Yoda’s collar by folding two strips of beige felt in half lengthwise, securing with hot glue, then tucking one into the other (see the picture above), attaching them together with more hot glue.
Wrap the collar around the base of the Grogu pumpkin and secure with hot glue.
Finally, attach his ears to the back of the pumpkin with hot glue so that they stick out on the sides.

Happy Halloween, and may the Force be with you!
