I’ve been fine-tuning this one for a long time, and I’m so excited to share my Bacon and Shrimp Rangoons recipe with you today! This isn’t your run-of-the-mill shrimp rangoon recipe. These savory shrimp cream cheese wontons are next level with the addition of bacon! This will become one of your go-to party appetizers. What you need to make fried shrimp wontons
I’ve got the full fried shrimp wontons recipe at the end of the post, but here are the ingredients you will need to make bacon and shrimp rangoons (along with a few tips):
- 1 tablespoon sesame oil (this is key!)
- 4 ounces peeled and deveined uncooked shrimp, chopped
- 1/8 teaspoon garlic salt
- 1/8 teaspoon ground ginger
- Vegetable oil, for frying
- 1 (8-ounce) package cream cheese, softened
- 2 tablespoons real bacon bits (or 1/8 cup – I use the soft, real kind from Oscar Meyer in the baggie, not the dry kind in the jar)
- 2 tablespoons minced white onion
- 1 teaspoon dried chopped chives
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
- 36 (3-inch square) wonton wrappers (if your wrappers are not quite square – mine were about 3″x4″ – trim them so they are square)
How to make shrimp rangoons
To make these shrimp rangoons, you’ll start by sautéing the shrimp. To do this, heat sesame oil in a sauté pan (sesame oil adds a little something special that regular oil just can’t do for this shrimp rangoon recipe). Add the chopped shrimp to the hot sesame oil along with garlic salt and ground ginger, and sauté until opaque (this will take about 2-3 minutes – shrimp cooks fast, especially when chopped into small pieces like in this recipe). Remove the shrimp with a slotted spoon (so you can separate them from any excess liquid in the sauté pan) and set aside in a mixing bowl.
Next, you’ll heat your frying oil (I use vegetable oil) in a deep-fryer or large saucepan until it reaches 350 degrees F. While the oil is heating, add softened cream cheese, real bacon bits, minced onion, dried chives, garlic powder, and black pepper to the bowl with the shrimp. Mix until the ingredients are well combined.
Next, it’s time to assemble the shrimp cream cheese wontons. Place a spoonful of the cream cheese mixture on the center of each wonton (I use about 1 heaping teaspoon for each).
Variation tip: If you prefer your fried shrimp wontons with more filling, reduce the recipe to 24 wontons with a little more filling in each. This is all about preference. The way the recipe is written makes for a lighter, bite-sized shrimp rangoon, but some prefer a fuller, cheesier fried shrimp wonton.
To seal the shrimp and cream cheese wontons, follow these steps:
- Using your fingers, dampen the edges of the wontons with water (I keep a ramekin or small bowl with water next to my cutting board).
- Bring the four corners of the wrapper up over the filling so the tips of the corners meet in the middle (see the example on the left in the photo above).
- Moisten your fingers in the water again and press the straight edges together to seal in four points (see the example on the right in the photo above – this is how it should look after it is sealed).
Finally, it’s time to fry your bacon and shrimp rangoons. Working in batches, place the wonton bundles in the hot oil and fry until they are a light golden brown (about 3 minutes depending on how hot your oil is). They continue to darken after they are removed from the oil, so be careful not to over-brown them while frying. After frying your shrimp cream cheese wontons, place them on a paper towel-lined plate to absorb any excess cooking oil.
You can eat the Bacon and Shrimp Rangoons on their own, or serve with a dipping sauce. They are delicious dipped in soy sauce, a mix of soy sauce and sesame oil, sweet and sour sauce, or a chili-garlic dipping sauce.
