Looking for a fun new St. Patrick’s Day dessert idea? I’ve got you covered! Just like how I love #hearteverything in February, I love everything shamrock-shaped and green for St. Patrick’s Day in March (see my delicious Mint Swirl Shamrock Brownies as an example). I was inspired to make shamrock cupcakes this year after I saw an idea shared by Food Network in this Reel for making heart cupcakes. I thought it might be a fun hack for making shamrock St. Patrick’s Day cupcakes, too, and I was right! It worked like a charm. I’m sharing step-by step photos and instructions on how to make them so you can try it, too. I hope these shamrock shaped cupcakes give you a little bit of the luck o’ the Irish this St. Patrick’s Day!
What you’ll need to make shamrock cupcakes
- Chocolate cupcake mix, prepared to package directions (with eggs, oil, water, etc.), or your favorite cupcake recipe batter
- Paper cupcake liners
- Aluminum foil
- Prepared white cupcake frosting, or your favorite buttercream frosting recipe
- Green food coloring
- Icing bag with a wide icing tip
How to make shamrock shaped cupcakes
- Make cupcake batter per package or recipe directions.
- Line a muffin tin with paper cupcake liners.
- Add batter into cupcake liners, only filling halfway.
- Cut a 4” strip of aluminum foil.
- Cut the foil strip into 4 pieces.
- Roll each piece into little foil cylinders (like in this Reel).
- Push part of the cupcake paper liner inward and use a piece of the foil to keep it in position. Repeat in the spot across from the first indent.
- Add two more indents with foil so you have a shamrock shaped cupcake.
- Repeat with the rest of the cupcakes. Don’t worry if they aren’t perfectly shaped. You can fix that with the frosting later!
- Bake cupcakes per package or recipe directions, then let cool before frosting.
- Mix frosting with green food coloring and put in a pastry bag with a wide icing tip.
- Using a pastry bag and a wide icing tip, frost the cupcakes in a shamrock pattern, starting with a circle on the outside of each leaf and piping inward.
It’s really simple to make these shamrock shaped cupcakes, and they come out so festive and cute!
