Have you ever thought of making homemade fortune cookies? Wilton recently commissioned me to make some festive Valentine Fortune Cookies (you can get the Valentine’s Day fortune cookies recipe on their website now!), and not only were they super fun to make, but I love how they turned out by adding some holiday touches like Candy Melts and sprinkles in seasonal colors and themes. I love using Candy Melts as a simple way to add a holiday or party theme to treats (see my Candy Melt Ideas for Parties, my Mardi Gras Candy Melt Pretzels, my Easy Easter Bunny Pops, and these Gift Tag Cookies as just a few examples), so the completed cookies were dipped and drizzled in Candy Melts and sprinkled with Valentine’s Day sprinkles. Keep reading for photos of the final results along with some of my tips for making fortune cookies for Valentines Day. These Valentine’s Day Fortune Cookies are perfect for gifting!

How to make fortune cookies for Valentines Day

Get the complete recipe and detailed instructions for the Valentine Fortune Cookies on Wilton here, and here are some helpful tips for making them. If you’ve never made fortune cookies from scratch, there is a little bit of a learning curve, but once you get it down, you’ll have no problem making fortune cookies for Valentines Day or any occasion!
Tips for Making Homemade Fortune Cookies:

- You might need to make a few as a test to get the method down. The process all happens very quickly, so don’t worry if you make a mistake on the first few. Just keep going, and you’ll get it!

- Only make two cookies at a time. No matter how fast you think you can work, fortune cookies must be really hot to shape properly, or you risk them setting too quickly (which will cause them to either not hold their shape or crack while you try to shape them). Be patient and stick with the instructions and make only two at a time.

- Before adding the slip of paper with the fortune, you must flip the cookie upside down onto the cookie sheet. This is because the top of the cookie will be too moist, which will cause the paper to stick to the cookie and tear when cracked open. The bottom side is dryer after the baking portion, which is why you’ll flip it over before adding the paper.

- You will use the rim of a coffee mug to shape the cookie (you can see how it’s done in this YouTube video). You can use this step to really finesse the shape and make sure the cookie is sealed as it starts to cool.

- I recommend placing the shaped Valentine fortune cookies in a muffin tin to cool, as the rounded edges of the muffin cups will help them to maintain their shape.

- It is very important to allow the cookies to cool completely before decorating them. This will ensure they are nice and crisp before dipping in warm Candy Melts, as the Candy Melts can soften the cookie. If you rush it, they will still taste fine, but they won’t break apart as crisply.

- After decorating, store the Valentine’s Day Fortune Cookies in an air-tight container, especially if you’re in a humid environment, as moisture in the air can soften the cookies and make them less crisp.
