You know I love easy, festive ideas, and last year we made the cutest Christmas breakfast that took just minutes to prepare: cinnamon rolls shaped like a Christmas tree! This Cinnamon Roll Christmas Tree is a simple holiday breakfast idea using canned cinnamon rolls arranged in a baking dish. There’s really not much to this one, but the kids loved eating this cinnamon rolls Christmas tree while seeing what Santa had brought for them. Keep reading for the step-by-step instructions for how to make a Christmas tree made out of cinnamon rolls.

What you need to make a cinnamon rolls Christmas tree

  • 1 (8-count) can refrigerated cinnamon rolls with icing (Note: to make a star on top, they must be the kind of cinnamon rolls that unroll. This Pillsbury kind does not, however this Walmart Great Value one does.)
  • Green and yellow food coloring
  • Holiday sprinkles (to look like ornaments for the tree)

How to make a Christmas tree made out of cinnamon rolls

Christmas tree cinnamon roll
  1. Arrange cinnamon rolls in a tree shape in a baking dish. To do this, you’ll have one at the bottom (for a trunk), then a row of three, a row of two, and a row of one (like in the Christmas tree cinnamon rolls photo above).
How to make cinnamon rolls shaped like a Christmas tree
  1. Unroll the top cinnamon roll and reform it into a star-like shape (kind of similar to these heart cinnamon rolls I make for Valentine’s Day) and place it on top of the cinnamon rolls Christmas tree.
  2. Bake in the oven per package directions for the cinnamon rolls.
  3. Divide the icing included in the package with the majority into a small bowl, and a very small amount (enough to ice just one of the rolls) into another small bowl. Mix the larger amount with some green food coloring and the smaller amount with some yellow food coloring.
  4. Frost the majority of the Christmas tree cinnamon rolls with green icing, then frost the star with yellow icing.
