Looking for Halloween pancake ideas for Halloween breakfast? These skull pancakes are easy Halloween themed pancakes that the kids will love! Halloween is my favorite holiday, so I’m always trying to think of new ways to get festive. Last year for a Halloween breakfast idea I decided to try making Halloween pancakes, and this is what I came up with! This Halloween pancake recipe is easy to make and simple to decorate. I went with skull and crossbones for the Halloween shaped pancakes, and a few added toppings really brought the theme to life (death?). See how to make them below, and be sure to pin this for your Halloween pancakes ideas!

What you need to make this Halloween pancake recipe

Halloween pancakes

This Halloween pancake recipe doesn’t require much! Here’s what I used:

  • Pancake mix (such as Bisquick)
  • Water (as needed for the mix)
  • Dash of cinnamon (mixed into the batter)
  • Chocolate chips
  • Mini marshmallows
  • Large liquid measuring cup
  • Skillet or griddle
  • Nonstick cooking spray
  • Spatula
  • Butter, syrup, and/or your other favorite pancake toppings (a red strawberry syrup could be a fun way to add to the creepiness of the recipe)

How to make Skull and Crossbones Halloween pancakes

These Halloween pancakes start with preparing the batter. I mix the pancake mix, water, and cinnamon in a large liquid measuring cup. Mixing the batter directly in the measuring cup saves you from washing a bowl, since you’re going to use the liquid measuring cup to pour the Halloween pancake shapes.

Heat your skillet or griddle and spray with nonstick cooking spray. To make the skull pancakes, using the batter in a liquid measuring cup, pour a larger rounded pancake circle (for the top part of the skull pancakes), then on the bottom end, add a small rectangle of batter (for the jaw part of the skull). Prepare as usual for pancakes, flipping when ready and cooking until done.

To make the crossbones for the Halloween themed pancakes, using the batter in the liquid measuring cup, pour two longer lines of batter. Add two small circles on each end of each line. Cook just like you would cook pancakes, carefully flipping them to brown on both sides. Since these pieces are longer, they can break, so use a long spatula, or two spatulas if needed to flip them carefully.

Arrange the skull and bones on your serving plates so that the bones cross over each other sitting below the skull pancakes. Allow the Halloween pancakes to cool a little before decorating them, or the toppings can melt. When cooled enough for the chocolate not to melt, arrange chocolate chips on top of the skull pancakes to create eyes (4 chocolate chips in a diamond shape for each eye) and a nose (3 chocolate chips in a triangle shape). Add 3 mini marshmallow pieces on top of the jaw for teeth.

Serve your Halloween pancake recipe with butter, syrup, or your favorite pancake toppings. A strawberry syrup could add a creepy, bloody vibe for the Halloween breakfast theme.

Halloween pancake ideas: Skull Pancakes

The kids just loved the Halloween shaped pancakes last year, so I am sure this will now be an annual Halloween breakfast tradition! The kids can also help decorate the skulls, and feel free to let them be creative! You can even use colorful sprinkles to make sugar skull versions of these for Día de los Muertos!
