One of our favorite posts of the year is here: the one where we announce our family Halloween costume for the year! This year we chose a Fantastic Four Halloween costume after seeing The Fantastic Four: First Steps movie. If you’re looking for family of four Halloween costumes, this one worked out perfectly (and it can also work for families of five that have just introduced a new baby to the family). I’m sharing all the details from our DIY Fantastic Four cosplay, including how we made our Mister Fantastic cosplay (Reed Richards costume), Sue Storm costume, Human Torch costume (Johnny Storm cosplay), and our Fantastic Four The Thing costume (Ben Grimm Halloween costume). I hope our Fantastic Four costumes inspire you for Halloween or for an upcoming convention!

As I said, this theme is perfect for family of four Halloween costumes. The DIY was also easier than some years past since we could duplicate many of the elements of our Fantastic Four costumes from person to person, just customizing for our family’s individual sizes. I’ve got product links and DIY instructions for each character’s Fantastic 4 Halloween costumes below.

DIY Reed Richards (Mister Fantastic) cosplay

Mal’s Mister Fantastic cosplay was one of the easier of our Fantastic Four costumes since the character has a simpler sweater, but it also included more hair and makeup than the other costumes. Here’s how we made it.
What you need to make a Reed Richards costume:
- Blue ribbed turtleneck sweater with a Fantastic Four logo decal on the front. I created the decal using white iron-on material with my Cricut from this logo file I purchased on Etsy.
- Blue pants. These lounge pants matched the color of the sweater perfectly. They are a little baggy, but really soft and will totally get regular use after Halloween.

- White belt with circle clasp. I added a Fantastic Four logo decal on the belt that I made using black vinyl with my Cricut from this logo file I purchased on Etsy. I also used a silver Sharpie to add other details on the belt.
- White gloves. If you are going for more movie accuracy, you can color the palms of the gloves black (but we decided to keep it simple).
- White costume boot covers (or white boots if you’re on less of a budget)
- Silver silicone bracelet that I added details to using a black Sharpie. These come conveniently in packs of 3 so it worked for all our normal wrist-size characters (since the bracelet wouldn’t fit on The Thing’s wrists).

- Temporary gray hair color for the sides
- Makeup pencils to make a goatee

DIY Sue Storm costume

I got dibs on the Susan Storm costume! Here is how I made my Susan Storm cosplay.
What you need for a DIY Sue Storm Halloween costume:
- Blue ribbed turtleneck sweater with a Fantastic Four logo decal on the front. I created the decal using white iron-on material with my Cricut from this logo file I purchased on Etsy.
- White ribbed turtleneck sweater, which I cut and attached over the blue sweater. I kept it simple and pinned it on, but you can sew or hot glue it on as well.
- Blue leggings. Unfortunately I didn’t have the same color matching luck with my leggings as we did with the lounge pants for the other characters, but it still made due.
- White belt with circle clasp. I added a Fantastic Four logo decal on the belt that I made using black vinyl with my Cricut from this logo file I purchased on Etsy. I also used a Sharpie to add other details on the belt. See the photo in the section above for a closer look at the belt DIYs.
- White gloves (the movie gloves have black palms if you want to take it a step further than we did)
- White costume boot covers (or white boots if you’re on less of a budget)
- Silver silicone bracelet that I added details to using a black Sharpie.
- Shoulder-length wavy platinum blonde wig with a side part

dIY Johnny Storm (Human Torch) cosplay

Sawyer had to be Johnny Storm (AKA The Human Torch). His Johnny Storm cosplay is similar to the other characters, but with some streamers added for flames. Here’s how to make it!
What you need for Fantastic Four Human Torch cosplay
- Blue ribbed turtleneck sweater with a Fantastic Four logo decal on the front. I created the decal using white iron-on material with my Cricut from this logo file I purchased on Etsy.
- White ribbed turtleneck sweater. I used the same sweater for the Human Torch costume that I used for my Susan Storm Halloween costume, but we opted not to cut the white sweater (Sawyer wanted to keep both the blue and white sweaters after Halloween). We decided to fold and pin the white sweater on top of the blue sweater so they could both get use after the holiday.
- Blue pants (these lounge pants matched the color of the sweater perfectly, though they are a little baggier than the costume look from the movie)
- White belt with circle clasp. I added a Fantastic Four logo decal on the belt that I made using black vinyl with my Cricut from this logo file I purchased on Etsy. I also used a Sharpie to add other details on the belt. See the photo in the Mister Fantastic section above for a closer look at the belt DIYs.
- White gloves (optional: color the palms black to match the gloves in the movie)
- White costume boot covers (or white boots)
- Silver silicone bracelet that I added details to using a black Sharpie.
- Red, orange, and yellow streamers wrapped around a hand for a flame look. You can also attach some to the back of the arms and head if you want a dramatic flame look while running.

DIY Fantastic Four The Thing costume

Since my husband is always the funny costume character (see his Loki and Beetlejuice costumes), he of course was going to be our Fantastic Four Thing costume. Here are the details for his The Thing cosplay.
What you need to make The Thing Halloween costume from The Fantastic Four: The First Steps:
- Muscle suit (for bulk under the costume)
- Blue ribbed turtleneck sweater (oversized to fit over the muscle suit) with a Fantastic Four logo decal on the front. I created the decal using white iron-on material with my Cricut from this logo file I purchased on Etsy.
- White ribbed turtleneck sweater. I got him a larger one than the sweater Sawyer and I used for our costumes since his costume was quite a bit larger. Like with the Johnny Storm cosplay, we decided not to cut the white sweater, and instead fold and pin it over the top of the blue sweater.
- Blue pants (these lounge pants matched the color of the sweater perfectly)
- White belt (a different, wider belt than the others, since the other belt would have looked too small on the larger scale of The Thing Halloween costume). I added a Fantastic Four logo decal directly onto the belt that I made using black vinyl with my Cricut from this logo file I purchased on Etsy. See the photo in the Mister Fantastic section above for a closer look at the belt DIYs.
- White costume boot covers (or white chunky boots if you have the budget)

- The Thing mask. I found a budget plastic mask on Amazon, but it was red, so we needed to paint it.
- The Thing fist hands. We used a kid’s play set of hands, but painted them so they would match the colors we used to paint the mask.
