Can I substitute Brie in this Camembert pastry bites recipe? What are the differences between Camembert and Brie?
Do you prefer Brie, or wonder if it can be substituted in this Camembert and cranberry puff pastry recipe? It’s true that these two cheeses are similar and can be interchangeable in recipes based on their similarities (both are earthy-flavored creamy, soft, French cheeses with edible rinds). That being said, Camembert and Brie have different notes and boldness to their flavors, which will change the final taste of the recipes (though not in a bad way!). Camembert has a bolder, more pronounced umami taste with garlicky and nutty notes, whereas Brie is milder, more buttery, with fruitier notes. I love both cheeses, but I’ve personally always preferred the meatier, more mushroomy taste of Camembert. Either option would work in these puff pastry bites, so feel free to experiment.
What you need to make this baked Camembert with cranberries appetizer
To make these Camembert and cranberry appetizers, you’ll need the following:
- 24-cup mini muffin pan (or a 12-cup pan working in batches)
- Nonstick cooking spray
- Flour (for dusting your surface)
- 1 sheet frozen puff pastry, thawed
- Rolling pin
- Pizza cutter
- Fork
- Camembert cheese, cubed (Tip: Freeze the cheese for 15 minutes before you are ready to cut it to make cutting soft cheeses like this easier)
- Knife
- Whole berry cranberry sauce (homemade or canned)
- Spoon
- Chopped fresh rosemary
- Orange zest
How to make Camembert and cranberry puff pastry bites
To make this baked Camembert with cranberries appetizer, start by preheating the oven to 375 degrees F. Spray the cups of a 24-cup mini muffin pan (or two 12-cup mini muffin pans) with nonstick cooking spray.
Roll the puff pastry sheet out into a large rectangle on a lightly floured surface. Use a pizza cutter to slice the rectangle into 24 (2 1/2-inch) squares. As you can see in the photo above, I cut the sheet in 6×4 to get 24 squares.
Press the puff pastry squares into each cup of the prepared mini muffin pan(s) and prick the bottom with the tines of a fork. Cut the Camembert into approximately 1/2-inch cubes (Tip: You can freeze the cheese for 15 minutes before you are ready to cut it to make cutting easier). Add a cube of cheese to each of the cups.
Spoon about a teaspoon of cranberry sauce in each pastry cup on top of the cheese (being careful to keep the sauce inside the pastry cup, as the sauce may burn if it spills out onto the edges of the pan while cooking).
Sprinkle chopped fresh rosemary and orange zest on top of each cup.
Bake the Camembert and cranberry puff pastry bites in the pre-heated oven for 15 to 16 minutes, or until the pastry is puffed and the corners are golden brown. Cool the Camembert puff pastry bites in the pan on a wire rack for 3 minutes before transferring the Camembert bites to a serving dish.
These cranberry and Camembert pastry bites are delicious when served a little warm, as the cheese will be gooey and wonderful.
There is something about the combo of Camembert and cranberry puff pastry bites with that orange zest and fresh rosemary. YUM!
These baked Camembert with cranberries bites are the perfect size for parties.
